Die Milchfrau und der Alchemist

This is a building steeped in history, which was in the hands of apothecaries for centuries. In the stair railing, an owner had his initials immortalised in gold around 1830. Carl Stein. In 1863 the apothecary Gustav Schröder acquired the house. He was not only an apothecary, but also responsible for the quality control of cow’s milk. The artist’s illustration takes up the story of this apothecary. Below, a farmer’s wife with her cow. She is bringing the milk to be tested. Alongside the historical aspect, the work also holds a love story within it. A love story between the milkmaid and the alchemist. She is deeply in love with him, but he is too busy to notice her advances. If it were up to the artist Robis, the story might yet come to a good end. The apothecary only has to listen at last when the raven croaks: “She loves you, she loves you!”.
