Farbklang

Composition, sampling: the kinship between music and painting shows itself not only in the language used to discuss the two disciplines. For the muralist Chromeo, the relationship between these two artistic forms of expression is an obvious one. Both call for dramaturgy, for innovation, for craftsmanship. The composition of the mural was strongly shaped by the given conditions, such as the format of the wall and the two waste bins standing in front of the picture. Accordingly, the main focal points, the two hands, are painted at the far right in order to keep visually clear of the bins. As a template for the two hands, Chromeo deliberately used stock photos (pictures from a site on which photographers offer their photographs for use). The aspect of sampling comes into play here, in that an already existing photograph by a third party is interpreted in paint and rearranged.

About Chromeo

Winterthur, Switzerland

David Kümin, alias Chromeo, was born in 1982 and grew up in Winterthur. Already fascinated as a child by murals and illegal graffiti, the observer became the actor: as a teenager he picked up the spray can, which marked his start as an artist. At the Kunsthochschule Luzern he completed the Master in Fine Arts, Public Spheres and Major Art Teaching. It matters to Chromeo that his works have depth of content and are not merely decorative in character. With his work he wants to prompt the viewer to engage with the piece.
