Über das Kunstwerk

Composition, sampling — the relationship between music and painting is not only reflected in the linguistic engagement with the two disciplines. For the muralist Chromeo, the relationship between the two forms of musical expression is obvious. Both require dramaturgy, innovation, craftsmanship. The composition of the wall painting was heavily influenced by circumstances such as the format of the wall and the two trash cans that stand in front of the painting. Accordingly, the main eye notes, the two hands, are painted on the far right in order to visually avoid the buckets. As a template for the two hands, Chromeo deliberately used stock photos (images from a page on which photographers offer their photographs for use). This should involve the aspect of sampling, in which an existing photograph by a third person is painterly interpreted and rearranged.

Über Chromeo

David Kümin, alias Chromeo, was born in 1982 and grew up in Winterthur. Fascinated by murals and illegal graffiti as a child, the viewer became an actor: As a teenager, he grabbed a spray can, which marked his start as an artist. He completed a Master's degree in Fine Arts, Public Spheres and Major Art Teaching at the Lucerne Academy of Fine Arts. It is important to Chromeo that his works have a depth of content and not only have a decorative character. With his work, he wants to inspire the viewer to engage with the work.
